Rush North Shore Medical Center

As a 265-bed teaching hospital affiliated with Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Rush North Shore delivers leading-edge care in a supportive caring environment.

Rush North Shore, 9600 Gross Point Road, Skokie, boasts many excellent programs. It has one of the busiest joint replacement programs in the state. The cardiac surgery team at Rush North Shore credits its strong clinical outcomes following surgery from the continuity gained by working side-by-side for over 10 years.

A leader in cancer care, it was one of the first hospitals in the area to provide access to PET/CT diagnostic technology and intensity modulated radiation therapy. Rush North Shore’s emergency department is ranked in the top 10 percent in the most recent Press Ganey® patient satisfaction survey.

Cardiac Care

In case of acute myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack, time can be critical. The sooner treatment is begun, the less damage will likely occur.

Angioplasty and stenting to open the blocked vessel is an essential treatment option for acute MI. But in order to be effective, this therapy should be completed as soon as possible following the patient’s arrival at the hospital. With two cardiac catheterization labs just steps away from the emergency department, and established protocols for early diagnosis and management of chest pain, the experienced team on staff at Rush North Shore can often complete this procedure in less than an hour.

Rush North Shore offers a full scope of services for heart disease and related disorders, from diagnosis through rehabilitation. It is an area leader in the use of drug-coated stents, which can help prevent the formation of new blockages following angioplasty. When warranted, the cardiac surgical team-including board-certified surgeons, a cardiac anesthesiologist, trained nurses and perfusionists-can be mobilized within minutes.

A wide range of cardiac procedures are done at Rush North Shore. These include several leading-edge options like “beating-heart” bypass surgery, implantation of automatic implantable defibrillators and physiologic pacemakers to treat irregular heartbeats, and minimally invasive treatments for abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Cancer Care

A leader in cancer care, Rush North Shore Medical Center was one of the first hospitals in the area to provide access to PET/CT diagnostic technology and intensity modulated radiation therapy.

The Cancer Program at Rush North Shore Medical Center is dedicated to meeting the needs of patients and the community through a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, treatment and care of cancer patients. Offering leading-edge diagnostic technologies and treatments, Rush North Shore Medical Center’s Cancer Program has received eight consecutive three-year certificates of approval from the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer, and meets the high national standards that ensures excellence in patient care, treatment and research.

Orthopedic Care

Surgeons at Rush North Shore have a reputation for innovation using the latest devices, such as a cementless or metal-on-metal replacement hips, which reduce the need for future surgeries. And they use the latest techniques including minimally invasive hip replacement.

“Surgeons at Rush North Shore are among the best,” said Wayne Goldstein, M.D., section director of orthopedic surgery. “Our patients benefit from our comprehensive approach to joint replacement. Every aspect of the program from preoperative evaluation to postoperative pain management, is designed to enhance a patient’s comfort and care.”

The joint replacement program is the cornerstone of an outstanding orthopedic department. Sports medicine procedures, including ACL reconstructions and minimally invasive rotator cuff repairs; and spine surgery, including minimally invasive disc removal, decompressive procedures and stabilization for all levels of spinal instability, are additional areas of expertise.

The official team hospital for the American Hockey League three-time champion Chicago Wolves, orthopedic surgeons on staff at Rush North Shore Medical Center have treated members of the Chicago Bulls and many international athletes.

The Centre for Women's Health

The Centre for Women’s Health opened in 2005 bringing an entirely new level of care to women approaching mid-life and beyond. The Centre is under the direction of Dr. Edward Linn, Chairman of the Department of OB-GYN, who specializes in mid-life women’s issues and Dr. Howard Topel, Director of Gynecologic Surgery, who is recognized as a leader in the advancement of gynecologic laparoscopic surgery.

Emergency Department

Rush North Shore’s Emergency Department (ED) is a Level II trauma center with 17 glass-enclosed private rooms. It is staffed around the clock by board-certified physicians and nurses certified in advanced life support including pediatric advanced life support.

We're consistently ranked in the top 10 percent in the Press Ganey® patient satisfaction survey. Press Ganey is the nation’s leading health care satisfaction measurement organization.

“We consistently score well. I believe it is because we provide care in a comfortable, private environment,” said Joe LaMothe, Chairman of the emergency department. “We’re efficient, yet each family’s experience is marked with a true sense of compassion and concern.”
